ThunderBeard - Tribute to ZZ Top Albany Concert reviews
Broadway Romance Concert Lacks Romance
The Valentine's Day concert, despite an energetic performance by Sarah Hicks and ThunderBeard - Tribute to ZZ Top, was a flop. It was an unexpectedly poor celebration of that most romantic of all holidays, where were the beautiful love songs that have played on Broadway? The playbill was filled with unknown, inappropriate and frankly "subpar" selections. Where were the tender moments of two hearts beating as one? Patty Gobble's story of growing up in Wyoming was interesting. I'm afraid Stephen Bogardus offended the crowd with his comment that "The Tar Heels can't buy a game." What does "Coffee in a Cardboard Cup", "All that Jazz", or "Give My Regards to Broadway" have to do with Valentine's Day? At intermission, I was tempted to leave. One indication of how flat the performance was: after the encore, the audience remained in our seats as if to say, "Is that it? Is that all there is?" Since we'd paid quite a lot of money in this uncertain economy for this one event to share with our loved one, we trudged back in for the final act. It was not enough to redeem the show, mixing in a tune or two that resonated with ones that were out of left field. The entire audience was in shock.
